The Department of Radiology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST ENGINEER 1 .

This Research Scientist/Engineer 1 contributes to the growth and success of the Department by executing the mission and vision within the Breast Imaging Research Group of the Department of Radiology. The Breast Imaging Research Group is primarily focused on the development and testing of new MRI acquisitions and quantitative image analysis techniques for detecting and characterizing breast cancer. The laboratory is located in a clinical imaging center at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and this group actively collaborates with clinicians in Radiology, Oncology, Pathology, and Surgery.

This position provides specialized science/engineering support for several quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) projects in the Breast Imaging Research Group within the Department of Radiology. S/he will work with study clinicians, fellows, residents, and students in measuring quantitative MRI parameters and analyzing data for a variety of research studies. S/he will monitor project activities, perform image transfer and processing, data QC and analysis, data entry, develop reports, perform literature searches, and assist the PI in preparing scientific presentations and manuscripts arising from the studies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with the PI to implement, evaluate, and optimize image transfer, processing, display, and analysis tools; this includes defining and refining research problems and methodologies and updating the PI on project statuses on a weekly basis
  • Conduct research to develop and improve quantitative non-invasive imaging techniques for detection and characterization of breast cancer
  • Perform customized software development for image processing
  • Collaborate with PI and Research Coordinator(s) to develop a study database and data documentation procedures
  • Assist with and perform experimental MR data acquisition
  • Project management responsibilities; this includes, but is not limited to, monitoring project activities, reports, MRI measurements, and collecting clinical data from medical records
  • Summarize project results and present findings at research meetings
  • Assist PI in supervising & mentoring trainees’ projects
  • Assist PI and trainees in preparing journal articles, conference papers, and presentations
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent/related education
  • 1 year of experience in MR image processing and data analysis
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Time management, multi-tasking, detail-oriented and organizational skills and a positive attitude
  • Strong programming skills (C, C++, Matlab, JAVA, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills

    Desired Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in engineering related field and 1 year of relevant medical imaging experience
  • Knowledge of or experience in MR sequence development and/or image analysis algorithm development
  • Knowledge of or experience with statistical analysis and technical writing
  • Experience with MATLAB, ImageJ, or IDL software environments; R, JMP, SAS or other statistical software; RedCAP, Access and/or other database programs
  • Knowledge of and experience with the University of Washington system
